Get ready for a thrilling top down shooter!
Jon Arbuckle- Covert Operations is the first top down shooter I've made on hyperPad, so please give constructive criticism in a formal manner.
This is only a demo, so don't expect too much.
Learn more about the game in the tutorial.
(And yes, it's the same Jon Arbuckle from the Garfield comic strip, I put him as the main character because I thought it was funny).

Well, overall fairly fun to play until the first cut to the red gate. I was playing on my ipad to test it out and when the character hit the red button in the maze the screen cuts over to the red gate. But then never resets on the main character again. you can move the controls and hear the character moving and shooting but nothing changes on the screen. Still needs a little work. But great start. Keep at it.

The controls are way better now! What do the green package things do though?
May 18, 2016
They restore your health.

But why are some normal coloured but the newer ones are coloured green?
May 24, 2016
The green ones give you 50 hp while the normal ones only give you 20 (sorry I couldn't reply to you sooner).

Oh, ok. That makes sense but it wasn't very clear.

Regarding the updated controls: I would make the left stick not rotate the player. Only have the right one rotate/aim. The left one can be used for moving/strafing.
May 16, 2016
Yeah, I think that would be a wiser decision for controls.
May 16, 2016
Alright, the left joystick doesn't rotate anymore! Also, I made the character much faster to speed up the pace of the game (I did this because I played Behroz's Zombie Apocalypse and realized my game was pretty slow in comparison).

Much better now! Another suggestion I would make, a "holster" weapon button. When pressed it would disable the shooting, so you can still look around with out it shooting.
Also, a melee attack would be awesome for when the player runs out of bullets. It's a shame you won't have access to your iPad over the summer.

Not bad! I really enjoyed this! I liked how that the second joystick was for moving the players distance view, very useful!

It's pretty good, you should take a look at controls used by games such as the binding of Isaac, where you control movement of the character with one joystick, and shooting with the other. It was a bit hard to play with the current controls because you have to move towards the enemy or stand still to shoot in simple controls, and you have to stretch your hand out to tap the shoot button and hold the joystick in advanced controls.

The next update is only going to have two joysticks, one to move, and one to rotate and shoot. So, it won't be as difficult to play as! Also, expect to fight bosses and more places to explore!

Sounds cool!

Pretty cool! I agree with Mlkpad14 with having more of an objective. I also heavily encourage using your own joystick and button graphics.

Nice shooter! I can see a lot of potential here, and look forward to seeing this progress.
Some feedback:
Your controls are not that great. Especially the "advanced" controls. The simply controls are kind of annoying that it rotates and moves, but I get you're trying to keep it simple. The Advanced controls are pretty much unusable. The shoot button is placed way to high and makes it very hard to press. You pretty much have to stop moving to shoot. Typically twin stick shooters have the other joystick also shoot. So while touching the aiming joystick also shoot.
No feedback when you pick up ammo, health, or orbs. Maybe some sort of sound + particle effect would work. Similar to the exploding crates, they are very satisfying to shoot :).
Some different walking sounds. It'd be cool if you change the walking sound for the different floors. This way it gives the feeling that you're actually walking on different environments.

Thanks for all the feedback! For the "advanced" controls, I was hoping for people to put their index finger on the button, and to put both their thumbs on the two joysticks. It seems I should have indicated that. I'll try to fix the controls in a later update.

Real nice job! I suggest making more of an objective to the game, or even like a sort of score for how long you last. The controls are also very annoying. They're extremely sensitive and it's hard to be controlling the player's movement, rotation, and making him shoot at the same time. And finally, it's really cool how the enemies are attracted to him, but the wall interferes with this system because they're stuck there trying to get through, which they can't.
But overall, great start!

If the layout where you have to make him move, rotate, and shoot at the same time is annoying, try using the first layout. It's much more simple. You don't HAVE to use the second one.

Also, thanks for the feedback!

I'm glad to help!
I tried both layouts before actaully, and it's pretty annoying to me not being able to turn around in the simpler one. If you could make more screen-type controls that'd be nice. Maybe you can tap somewhere on the screen to shoot in that direction, and you can have the player automatically rotate in that direction. Then, you could keep the joystick for moving, but it would be nice if it wasn't as sensitive. That's not your issue as much as Hyperpad's though. I don't know! You decide what up you think is best lol! Good luck!
